About our Courses. For over 20 years Craft Supplies have been successfully running woodturning courses at the Mill, Millers Dale, in the heart of the Peak District and more recently have introduced other specialised woodworking courses. Having relocated to Bradwell, only 6 miles from Millers Dale we now offer better teaching facilities. We have tutored woodturning to over 7,000 students already, and look forward to teaching many more at our new school room in Bradwell. The courses offered cater for the complete beginner to advanced level. All Tutors are highly skilled & accomplished woodturners in their own right. All tools, equipment, smocks etc. are provided and Craft Supplies place priority on safety and course participants can be assured of complete cover for Public Liability up to £1,000,000. Our courses are limited to four or five students so everyone attending can expect to receive a high level of individual tuition. Minimum age of students is 14 years.
Mick Hanbury Mick will be demonstrating Woodturning in our Shop Saturday 4th July 10.00 am - 7th 4.00 pm Mick is a skilful and artistic woodturner who has been turning for over 18 years. He is listed on the Register of Professional Turners as well as being a member of Association of Woodturners of Great Britain. Over the years Mick has developed a unique style of decorative finishes to his pieces and is well known for his beautiful finial boxes, elegant spiral stem goblets, and delicately patterned platters. Top of page Ken Allen Ken will be demonstrating Woodturning in our Shop Saturday 7th March 10.00 am - 7th 4.00 pm Ken's interest in woodworking started at a very early age. His main interest was in antique restoration, but he soon branched out into woodworking and has proved to be a very capable and popular woodturning instructor. He has taught in Australia winning many awards there and in the UK. Ken will adapt his course to suit the requirements of his students. Top of page Chris Ashton Chris will be demonstrating Woodturning in our Shop Saturday 7th February & 2nd May 10.00 am - 7th 4.00 pm With over thirty years experience, Chris Ashton is a prize-winning, self-taught turner from Tideswell, Derbyshire, who now specialises in natural edge items and large diameter platters and bowls. As a tutor he is renowned for his flexibility so his courses are generally tailored to meet the needs, interests and requirements of individual students. Chris particularly enjoys sharing his skills and introducing beginners to the fascinating hobby that is woodturning. Top of page Reg Slack Reg has been a woodturning tutor, judge and demonstrator for over 30 years and has amassed a wealth of experience lecturing in Canada and America as well as this country. An assessor for the Register of Professional Turners he was voted Britain's favourite woodturner in a national pole. Skilled in most aspects of woodturning his main forte is teaching beginners with in depth use of grinding and use of all tools. Bob Lambert Bob's woodworking skills have been acquired over many years. He is a highly qualified carpenter and joiner, with wide experience in cabinet making and a keen interest in all aspects of woodworking. Bob relishes the opportunity to pass on his knowledge and has taught woodworking the "Shopsmith Way" for over 11 years. Routing Course This basic router course will appeal to both the beginner and those wishing to broaden their routing knowledge. This course initially deals with router safety, applications, accessories and cutters available. The project for this course is a table top dressing table vanity mirror with drawer. The Router is the tool that has had the biggest effect on woodworking. Bob takes great pleasure in teaching others about the many exciting uses of this marvelous and versatile power tool and enjoys teaching the Router. Course content includes: Anatomy and safety, Cutter selection and care, Techniques and jig making, Router Joinery, Router accessories Cutter Selection, Controlled free hand routing, Dovetailing, Router cutter and collet care, Dove tailing and so much more. Top of page Cabinet Making Course The Cabinet Making Course provides you with the basic techniques you need to build projects such as kitchen cabinets, bookcases and more. You will build a handsome bed side cabinet – this is a hands on course and definitely not a lecture course. You will learn the techniques for cutting wood to accurate size, joining boards for wide panels, cutting accurate groove and rebates and master many other basic techniques you need in cabinet making. You will learn how to build frames and a raised panel doors and learn assembly techniques with biscuit jointing, doweling and making machine cut dovetails for drawer construction. Furniture Making Course On this course you will gain expert knowledge of furniture construction and techniques whilst building a beautiful drop-leaf table with a drawer, modelled after the traditional Pembroke table. Techniques that you will learn include leg and rail construction, lathe duplication, special furniture joinery and much more. Top of page Tom Hanson Tom works from his home in North Wales. His love of the countryside and its inhabitants are brought to life in wood using both traditional and contemporary tools. His tuition over the last 12 years has been greatly appreciated. The following will be thoroughly covered. Choosing tools, sharpening tools, planning and transferring designs to wood, cutting out using bow/band saws, use of tools and types of finish. Bob NeillBob will be demonstrating pyrography in our Shop Saturday 4th April 10.00 am - 7th 4.00 pm Bob became a full-time pyrographer after working as the head of a college art department. He is an international demonstrator, and can be seen at many craft shows around the country. Pyrography is an ancient and unusual art also known as "fire writing". The effect is produced by burning the surface of wood to various depths of brown to create a design or picture. It is very similar to drawing or sketching with a pen or pencil. Anyone can do pyrography, the technique is quite simple. Using a hot wire pencil the secret is to use a light, even pressure combined with even speed of stroke. You don't have to be able to draw...there are short cuts. Top of page Stephen Simmons Stephen established his own antique furniture restoration workshop in 1989 and has been running French polishing courses with us since 1994. The course aims to demystify French polishing and covers the whole process of hand polishing as well as cleaning and the treatment of scratches, water and heat marks. It also considers when French polishing is not appropriate and touches on other traditional finishes. It is ideal for the complete beginner and those who want to brush up on specific aspects. Stephen always contacts students before the course to ensure that it is tailored to meet their individual requirements. Alan Marshall Alan's love of music goes back over 40 years. He started as a keen amateur builder in 1981. Starting in full time business in 1987 has built up a reputation as one of the UK's premier hand makers of acoustic guitars. Alan will provide six days of expert tuition devised around a quality guitar kit. Much of the basic work has already been done to enable the student to get the most out of the course. The neck will be pre-machined, the tops and backs will be pre-sanded and jointed with the rosette fitted. The neck tail blocks prepared and bridge completed. The course will have a maximum of five students who should leave with the skills to complete their guitar, which will be in the final stages of production. You will also have learned the skills and techniques to continue to make quality guitars in your own workshop. An enjoyable and rewarding six days is guaranteed!
